PTA Recent Commodity Market Dynamics Intelligence, Analysis, and Forecast
I. Market Dynamics Intelligence
(A) Price Trends
- Futures Prices: On May 22, 2026, the main PTA futures contract TA607 on the Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange closed at RMB 6,246/ton, down RMB 274/ton (–4.20%) from the previous close of RMB 6,512/ton. It opened at RMB 6,530/ton, reached a high of RMB 6,536/ton, a low of RMB 6,240/ton, with open interest standing at 367,300 lots (–247 lots day-on-day), trading volume at 238,700 lots, and turnover amounting to RMB 7.611 billion.
- Spot Prices: As of May 21, the PTA spot reference price stood at RMB 6,580.83/ton, down 4.18% from RMB 6,867.86/ton on May 1; the May 20 reference price was RMB 6,573.67/ton (–4.28% vs. May 1); and the May 19 reference price was RMB 6,560.41/ton (–4.48% vs. May 1).
(B) Supply Situation
- Plant Maintenance: Starting in April 2026, domestic PTA facilities entered a concentrated maintenance period. Major producers—including Hengli, Sanfangxiang, and Ineos—each with annual capacities exceeding 10 million tons, initiated shutdowns. The newly added maintenance capacity in April totaled 12.7 million tons; planned maintenance capacity for May–June is set to increase further, with Yisheng also commencing maintenance. Consequently, industry operating rates dropped sharply from 71% to 65.31%, hitting the lowest level in three years for this period, resulting in a short-term structural supply shortage.
- Capacity Status: As of end-2025, total PTA capacity reached 94.715 million tons, representing a 10% year-on-year growth. Domestic PTA output in 2025 is projected at 73.9 million tons, an increase of 2.1 million tons (or +2.9%) over 2024—yet still below the capacity growth rate. No new PTA capacity is scheduled to come online in 2026, and long-term expansion plans are unlikely to materialize within the year, signaling a potential conclusion to the seven-year capacity expansion cycle.
(C) Demand Situation
- Downstream Operating Rates: At the terminal demand end, Jiangsu-Zhejiang weaving mill operating rates declined year-on-year by 7.5%. Weak order inflows have led enterprises to procure only on a just-in-time basis, with minimal inventory replenishment intentions—further dampening upstream PTA demand. Polyester operating rates and inventory days both indicate sluggish downstream demand. Although the polyester sector continues adding new capacity in 2026—with a total planned commissioning of 4.1 million tons—the recovery of domestic and overseas textile/apparel demand remains lackluster. The traditionally robust \"Golden September–Silver October\" peak season has failed to materialize, while continuous capacity releases across the polyester fiber sector have intensified supply-demand imbalances.
- Export Performance: In 2025, PTA exports are projected at 3.85 million tons, down approximately 0.5 million tons from 2024. Export growth has faced constraints, primarily due to India’s BIS certification requirements and the commissioning of local PTA plants in Turkey. However, on November 12, 2025, India announced the immediate cancellation of BIS certification requirements for PTA, reopening market access for Chinese PTA producers. Exports rebounded swiftly thereafter: in November 2025, PTA exports reached 358,900 tons—a 61.26% month-on-month increase—suggesting near-term improvement in domestic PTA export prospects.
(D) Inventory Situation
PTA inventory levels exhibit volatility. While absolute inventory values are not historically low, the pace of destocking remains relatively fast. Nevertheless, persistently weak downstream demand continues to exert pressure on inventory management.

Terephthalic acid (TPA) is a high-tonnage chemical, widely used in the production of synthetic materials, notably polyester fibers (poly-(ethylene terephthalate)).
Terephthalic acid is poorly soluble in water and alcohols, consequently up until around 1970 most crude terephthalic acid was converted to the dimethyl ester for purification. It sublimates when heated.
This chemical is included in Basic Chemicals - Acetic Acid Industry. See more about what is Terephthalic acid and Terephthalic acid SDS information.
