BASF and Carlisle Construction Materials have recently announced an innovative collaboration centered on Lupranat?ZERO, marking a significant milestone as the world’s first isocyanate boasting a zero carbon footprint. The collaboration aims to leverage Lupranat?ZERO, which stands for Zero Emissions Renewable Origins, in the production of MDI polyisocyanurate boards (PIR or polyiso) and rigid polyurethane foam, crucial components for the thermal insulation of buildings. This development carries substantial implications for the construction industry, particularly in light of the increasing emphasis on sustainable practices. Given Carlisle's position as a leading polyiso manufacturer, the partnership is deemed a natural progression towards exploring and implementing this groundbreaking technology.

Carlisle Construction Materials, renowned for its commitment to sustainability, is further bolstering its reputation through initiatives such as the conversion to an electric vehicle fleet and the recent commissioning of a 400,000-square-foot facility certified as the first industrial manufacturing plant in the United States to achieve LEED? Platinum under LEED v4 BD+C WDC. This commitment to eco-friendly practices aligns seamlessly with the exploration of Lupranat?ZERO, underscoring Carlisle's dedication to reducing environmental impact.

Wesley Sherrer, Senior Manager, Product Marketing - Insulation, at Carlisle, highlighted the company's forward-thinking approach, stating, "Carlisle is embracing the power of innovation and sustainability by exploring bio-based alternative raw materials." He emphasized the significance of integrating raw materials from rapidly renewable resources and recycled supply streams, signaling a transformative shift towards greener manufacturing practices and a commitment to fostering a more sustainable future.

Stefan Doerr, Senior Vice President, Monomers North America at BASF, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the collaborative effort between BASF and Carlisle to promote sustainability within the construction industry. "Our customers are showcasing their commitment to climate protection," stated Doerr, underscoring BASF's dedication to supporting environmentally-conscious initiatives.

Looking ahead, both BASF and Carlisle have set ambitious sustainability goals. BASF aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, with a focus on reducing the product carbon footprint (PCF) across its portfolio. The Monomers division is actively pursuing this goal by expanding its range of products with a lower CO2 footprint and committing to providing circular options for every major product line by 2025. Similarly, Carlisle has pledged to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, with interim targets including significant reductions in scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2030, as measured through the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).

The collaboration between BASF and Carlisle represents a significant step forward in the quest for sustainable solutions within the construction industry. By harnessing the potential of Lupranat?ZERO and prioritizing eco-friendly practices, both companies are poised to lead the charge towards a more environmentally-responsible future.
