Companies are tasked with managing the risks associated with these chemicals and providing customers and consumers with information on their safe usage. According to ECHA, "The newly added chemical, bis(α,α-dimethylbenzyl) peroxide, is toxic for reproduction and is used as a processing aid, e.g. as a flame retardant."
ECHA's Member State Committee (MSC) confirmed the inclusion of this substance, which brings the total number of entries on the Candidate List to 241. This list includes some groups of chemicals, resulting in an even higher total number of affected chemicals.
The inclusion of bis(α,α-dimethylbenzyl) peroxide on the Candidate List means it may be placed on the Authorisation List in the future. Should this occur, companies would need to apply for authorisation from the European Commission to continue using this substance. ECHA notes, "If a substance is on this list, companies cannot use it unless they apply for authorisation and the European Commission authorises its continued use."
In related news, the MSC agreement seeking process to classify triphenyl phosphate (TPhP; EC no. 204-112-2) as an SVHC was expected during the June meeting. However, due to substantial new information that emerged shortly before the meeting, ECHA decided to suspend this process. This suspension is to ensure the new data is thoroughly evaluated and considered, highlighting ECHA's commitment to making informed decisions. They stated, "This suspension ensures that the newly provided data will be properly evaluated and considered in the SVHC identification process."
